New Applicant Information

Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. We are a group of highly motivated and trained volunteer professionals. Our purpose is to respond for fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical and hazardous materials incidents, and to provide fire prevention and education programs for the citizens of our response area located in the Town of Ellington, Connecticut.
Described below is a basic outline of what you will encounter during the interview process after you have filled out and submitted an application. Prospective members will be required to do the following:

  1. Will need to go to the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles to request a
    recent copy of your driving record. This record may be obtained (same day) at
    the Enfield and Wethersfield branches. There is a fee, retain your receipt
    for reimbursement by the Fire Dept. Applicants for Junior Membership will not
    be required to submit a driving record.
  2. Will be required to submit to a background check. Your fingerprints will be
    taken at the Resident Trooper’s office (located behind the fire house, at 33 Arbor
    Way). Results typically take 3-4 weeks and are forwarded directly to the
    Ellington Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. Applicants under the age of eighteen
    will not be required to submit to a background check.
  3. Will be required to attend a physical examination performed by the Fire Dept
    physician. The cost for this exam is fully funded by the Department.
    Appointments should be made as soon as possible as they may vary due to
    physician schedule.
  4. In addition to the above listed items, the applicant will undergo a series of two
    (2) interviews with the members of the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.
    Membership Committee. Applicants for Junior Membership will be interviewed
    by the Explorer Post Membership Committee.

During the interview process we will discuss items such as:

  • Safety Procedures
  • Response to Calls
  • Policies and Procedures
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Tour of the Facility
  • Answer to any questions you may have

Once all of these requirements have been achieved, new members are inducted at the next scheduled department meeting following the last interview.
