Thanks, in part, to a generous grant award by the ELLINGTON GREATER TOGETHER COMMUNITY FUND through THE HARTFORD FOUNDATION FOR PUBLIC GIVING, The Ellington Volunteer Fire Department, Inc was able to purchase a Bullseye Digital Fire Extinguisher Training System from the Lion Group (formerly Bullex). This system includes a digital fire simulator (screen) that can simulate different types of fire with varying intensities that effectively simulate how to extinguish fires using hand held fire extinguishers without the danger and logistics (or mess) of using actual fire and extinguishing agents. This enables the fire department to train firefighters and members of the public in the use of extinguishers without the delay or expense of refilling extinguishers, fueling a training fire, or being limited by weather conditions as this system can be used indoors. The system also has simulated fire alarm stations as well as a mobile phone to dial 911 all of which is controlled and monitored remotely by the instructor/operator for accurate timing and evaluation. The total cost of the system was $22,410.00 with the grant covering $7,500 and the balance paid with corporate funds of the fire department raised by donations and our annual fundraiser. The fire department appreciates the opportunity to continue providing service to our community through effective training for our -members as well as community involvement in public education programs. The fire extinguisher trainer will be made available to the public at fire department events such as open houses, our annual Carnival and other events as well as by appointment f-or organizations/businesses/facilities who are interested in being trained on the proper use of fire extinguishers.
